Perfect For Your Purpose™ Was Never Just a Catchphrase
Estimated reading time: 6–7 minutes
My beautiful sisters,
At 55 years old, I saw a flyer for a pageant.
There were girls and women of different ages wearing beautiful gowns. Normally, I would have thought of my daughter, Jordan. But this time, I had an inner knowing that the invitation was for me.
I believed God was asking me to enter.
And I thought it was the most ridiculous thing.
I had never entered a pageant. I wasn’t even interested in pageants. I had a plate and seven screws in my ankle, and I would have to learn to walk in pageant heels.
“Lord, You must be kidding.”
But deep down, I knew He wasn’t.
The Call I Made to Prove I Didn’t Qualify
I decided I would at least make the phone call.
My reasoning went something like this: “Okay, Lord. I’ll call, find out I don’t qualify, and then we can forget this ever happened.”
Except the call didn’t go according to my plan.
There wasn’t an age limit that disqualified me. There wasn’t a weight requirement. I didn’t have to wear a bikini. I didn’t have to sing, dance, or perform a talent.
I needed a platform—a cause I cared about and a heart for serving.
That, I had.
I had volunteered throughout my life. Helping girls and women was already on my heart. My service was something I could bring, even with no pageant experience.
One by one, my excuses fell away.
“God, You’re serious, aren’t You?”
So I signed up.
My Yes Came Before I Knew How
I decided that if I was going to do this, I was going to give it my all.
I didn’t know everything it would require. I knew there would be a cost, preparation, and plenty to learn. But I believed God was asking me, and I wanted to be obedient.
For a year, I prepared.
I got the shoes. I practiced walking. I practiced answering questions. I worked on my fitness. I learned how to explain my platform and what I hoped to contribute.
My yes came before I knew how to do everything. Obedience first, preparation followed.
If I had waited until I felt fully prepared, I might never have begun. I took the next step, trusting God to equip me as I learned.
But let me be honest with you: I knew God was trustworthy. I didn’t trust Him for myself.
I could believe He would show up for someone else. This journey asked me to trust that He would show up for me. To believe that I mattered to Him, too.
As I Prepared, I Learned to Love Myself
Preparing for the pageant meant preparing for a responsibility. Much like preparing for a job interview, I needed to be able to speak about my experiences, explain my platform, and share how I hoped to serve.
As I considered what I had to offer, I began recognizing the value in my own life—the gifts God had given me, the experience I had gained, and the heart for serving that had been there all along.
As I prepared, I was also learning to love who God had created me to be.
That reached much further back than the pageant.
As a girl in junior high, I had been bullied for being overweight. Before that, I hadn’t questioned my beauty or identity in the same way. Those experiences left me struggling to love who I had been created to be.
Years later, I was preparing to stand before others and speak about my purpose. I had to look at my life and recognize something worth sharing.
I remembered the calling I had sensed in my early twenties. I considered my years of serving, my experiences, and my desire to help girls and women love themselves.
It broke my heart to hear them tear themselves down. I wanted them to know they had value in their uniqueness.
And I needed to receive that message for myself.
During those months, Perfect For Your Purpose™ took shape.
Why I Use the Word “Perfect”
I know the response.
“But Queen V, nobody’s perfect.”
Stay with me, Sis.
When I say you are Perfect For Your Purpose™, I am speaking about God’s intention in creating you. You are His workmanship—His masterpiece, as Ephesians 2:10 reminds us—created in Christ Jesus for good works.
You were created with purpose. You are loved by the One who created you.
Who are we to look at His workmanship and decide He got it wrong?
There is room for learning, healing, and growth. I had a year of preparation! But those things did not have to happen before I could offer God my yes.
Philippians 2:13 reminds us that God works within us, shaping our willingness and enabling us to act according to His purpose. He is our source.
Our yielded yes matters. We make ourselves available, then participate as He works in us and through us.
Your Part Matters
Scripture describes us as members of one body. We need the eyes. We need the hands. We need the feet. Each part has a place, and no part can tell another, “I don’t need you.”
That is the picture Paul gives us in 1 Corinthians 12.
No one’s work or service is more important than another’s. What matters is that each of us faithfully contributes the gifts and talents God has given us.
Your contribution may touch one person. It may reach many.
Either way, it matters.
Look at what God has already placed in your hands. What brings you joy? What burden moves you to serve? What have you learned that could help someone else?
Bring those things to Him. Ask Him to show you your next step.
You don’t have to know the whole path to begin walking.
What the Crown Meant to Me
In preparing to be a queen, I became a queen. During those months, I began to recognize and embrace the woman God had seen in me all along. It was as though He had already placed a crown on my head—a crown of honor that carried a responsibility to serve. I was learning to receive my identity in Christ and to use what He had given me to bless others.
By the time I stepped onto that stage, I was learning to walk in my identity in Christ. I knew I was loved. I knew I had something to give. And I was learning that I could trust Him with my life.
Whether or not a crown was placed on my head that night, that discovery was mine to carry forward.
Receiving the crown was an incredible moment. But the transformation had begun long before that night, as God taught me who I was in Him.
I won and became Mrs. South Dakota International 2020.
It was amazing. I had prepared and trusted God, and I was in awe.
In awe that He would show up for me. That I could trust Him. And that I mattered to Him.
The crown was a visible moment in a much deeper journey.
Life afterward brought hardship. I still have hard days. Trusting God hasn’t meant that every circumstance is easy or that I know what tomorrow will bring.
But I know I am loved.
I know I can trust Him.
I know I have purpose.
And when something is painful, He goes through it with me. His presence is still good.
Sis, Receive This for Yourself
This is why Perfect For Your Purpose™ was never just a catchphrase.
It came from a woman questioning, “Why me?” and learning to offer God her yes.
And now I want you to hear this:
You are seen. You are loved. You matter.
Everything about you matters to your Heavenly Father. Your worth is already held in His love, before the achievement, the recognition, or the next goal.
If He is asking you to take a step, bring Him your willingness. Let Him equip you. Prepare, learn, and contribute what He has given you.
You are Perfect For Your Purpose™ today.
